Week 3 - Canvas Art!!!

Last Christmas we were really tight on money so I decided to make gifts for everyone instead of buying them. We've all received "handmade" gifts....sometimes they're really cool or useful but often they end up living in the corner of our closet under the heap of junk we've been meaning to take to Goodwill. I didn't want to give "that" kind of homemade gift which in the end is more of a burden than a blessing to the recipient. I decided to turn to Pinterest (or more accurately...I decided to feed my Pinterest addiction) and found an inexpensive, quick, tasteful and easy to customize gift option.......CANVAS ART!

If you go to Pinterest and type "canvas art" in the search bar, you will see countless different techniques for turning a plane white canvas into a beautiful work of art! The best part is, you don't have to be Michael Angelo, Rembrandt, Monte, or Thomas Kinkade to create a piece that is worthy of showcasing above the fireplace or on a main focal wall.

Below are some of my favorite canvas projects. At the bottom I'll show you the three canvases we will be working on this Monday and the list of supplies you need for each. If you want to brave all three you are more than welcome to, but if you prefer to just focus on one, you can do that as well!

I can't wait until Monday! We're going to have a great time working on these together! Okay, now scroll down and check out these amazing canvases and let the creativity flow!

God bless you ladies!

My FAV Canvas Projects!!!

Some of these projects were done on wood, but we can do the same design for less work, less money, and still end up with a piece just as awesome as the pic's below.

This one is done on wood but the same design can be created on canvas using freezer paper,  paint, and an iron!

(Original Art B is For Brown)

Okay, so once again these aren't technically on canvas, they are on poster board, but it's such a cute design I couldn't resist and it is totally something that could be done on canvas therefore I deem them applicable for this project!

So for those who have left over burlap from the wreath project, this is a great use for any scraps you may have laying around.

SUPPLY LIST

CANVAS!!! When choosing your canvas, you can pick any size you want. Michaels, Joann’s and Artco will have the most variety. If you haven’t signed up to get their emails or mailings, I would highly suggest it. It’s annoying to get spammed every day, but it’s worth it for the money you will save. For those who are looking for a great deal and want to trek down 6th Ave in Tacoma, Artco is a GREAT place to get these supplies and they generally have lower prices. I believe Walmart also has canvases and several other supplies of the supplies you will need.

Project #1 – WHITE LETTER CANVAS (There is no step by step link for this one, but all you need is letters, glue, canvas and white paint and you can create what ever creative design you want!)

  • Word, Phrase or Scripture (it’s best to have these written before the project so you don’t accidentally spell something wrong)
  • Wood Letters or Raised Scrapbook Letters (You can get these at any craft store. You will want enough letters to be able to write out the word, phrase or scripture you have chosen)
  • Ribbon (this will be used for hanging your artwork)
  • Small Can of White Spray Paint (I would suggest get it in a mat finish)
  • Black Acrylic Paint (This is optional, some people like to paint the edges of their canvas to give it a little more dimension)

Project #2 – MOD PODGE PHOTO CANVAS (Click HERE for step by step instructions)

  • Printed Photo (you want it to match the same size as your canvas) NOTE: If you choose to do a photo canvas, you will need to have your photo enlarged and printed on paper (about as thick as scrap book paper). This is actually easy and very inexpensive. You can either stop by Walmart, Walgreens, FedEx Kinkos (Commons Mall) or Office Depot with a copy of your photo either on a thumb drive or smart phone and have them print it to whatever size you want (ask before you print so you know how much it will be). Or for those with crazy schedules, you can upload your photo through the website of these stores (I know Walmart does one hour printing from online orders if requested) and then all you have to do is swing by the store on your way home and pick it up. I would recommend getting at least two copies of your image so you have a back-up in case your mess up (we all do it).
  • Mod Podge (it comes in Mat or Gloss, pick which ever finish you prefer)
  • Ribbon (this will be used for hanging your artwork)
  • Black Acrylic Paint (This is optional, some people like to paint the edges of their canvas to give it a little more dimension)

Project #3 – EMBROIDERED BURLAP CANVAS (Click HERE for step by step instructions)

  • Burlap (choose a piece that mostly fits the canvas but it doesn’t have to be cut exactly to size)
  • Embroidery Floss & Needle (choose which ever color or colors you like)
  • Any embellishments you want (Optional)
  • Copy of the image you want to stitch on your burlap (make sure the image is printed to size)

Tools and Additional Supplies Needed for all the projects!
Scissors, Paper Towels, Paint Brush (1/2inch suggested), Paint Sponge, Empty Garbage bag, washcloth or rag

So there you have it!!! I can't wait to see what you ladies come up with on Monday!
